Imagine having the confidence to go about your day makeup-free and not worrying about your blemishes or skin discoloration because you have a successful skin treatment rather than a temporary fix. That’s where microdermabrasion comes in. This is a non-invasive skin treatment that renews your skin’s overall tone and texture, and at Connecticut Plastic Surgery Group of Southport, CT, we offer this service with the skill and compassion you deserve.
5 Main Benefits of Microdermabrasion
Compared to other skin treatment methods, such as lasers or chemical peels, microdermabrasion is far less invasive with a much faster healing time. The treatment uses a hand-held device with an abrasive surface that gently sands away the thick outer layer of the skin, which then removes the dead particles to reveal healthy and rejuvenated skin cells. Essentially, the treatment acts as a super-effective exfoliant. The whole treatment is painless and only takes about 30 minutes.
Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments performed today. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, it is the fourth most performed treatment in the nation. At Connecticut Plastic Surgery Group, only trained professionals perform this treatment to ensure the best results.
This treatment can address many dermatological conditions, such as:
- Fine lines
- Sun-damaged skin
- Acne-prone skin
- Oily skin
- Dry or patchy skin
- Superficial age spots
After removing the dead skin cells, new skin cells are exposed and the production of collagen proteins is triggered below the skin’s surface.
4. Immediate Results
Patients often see noticeable results after their first treatment as skin cells begin to regenerate immediately after the treatment. The influx of new collagen proteins results in the appearance of smoother, more taut skin.
5. Improved Confidence
Our skin is often the first thing people notice about us, and there’s no time like the present to take control of its appearance and take advantage of what modern medicine has to offer. While makeup and at-home remedies may be quick fixes, they can sometimes exacerbate your skin’s problem areas, and this treatment is a non-invasive, topical treatment that can reverse years of damage. The Treatment Process
Before your appointment, you’ll meet with a certified professional for a consultation, and together you will create a plan for your care. The frequency of treatments will vary based on the condition of your skin and your desired results.
There is little preparation required before your initial treatment. As with any skin care treatment, it’s best to avoid anything that will cause any irritation or inflammation, such as sun exposure, tanning beds, waxing, and exfoliants. You will also need to remove any makeup and cleanse your face before the treatment.
A member of Dr. Vasquez’s staff will oversee the entire treatment to make sure you receive the utmost care. You will lay back in a reclined chair while a handpiece passes over your skin two or three times.
There are different microdermabrasion hand-held devices on the market, but the one in our practice uses medical-grade silica crystals and a gentle vacuum to remove the dead cells on the outermost layer of skin. This device also stimulates the underlying epidermis to promote the generation of new collagen. Collagen is a protein in the skin that’s found abundantly while you’re a child, but its production declines as we age. New collagen helps tighten skin, reduces signs of aging, and makes the skin appear more smooth and even-toned.
The entire treatment only takes about 30 minutes, and once you’re done, the practitioner will apply a moisturizer and sunscreen to your face.
There is little to no downtime after a treatment, and you should be able to resume your daily activities immediately. It is important to keep your skin hydrated and to avoid using abrasive skincare creams or exfoliants for at least one day following treatment.
Are Results Permanent?
While you will notice immediate results after your first treatment, they are not permanent, and you will need to schedule follow-up sessions for maintenance. The number of follow-up appointments someone needs will vary on a case-by-case basis, so you should trust your microdermabrasion provider to give you the most accurate assessment. However, the average patient receives four to six treatments every week to 30 days.
Some people get treated weekly, every two weeks, or monthly, depending on their skin needs and personal preferences. At-home exfoliants are great to use in the interim between appointments to maintain healthy, fresh-looking skin.
Is This Just for the Face?
Most people get microdermabrasion treatments to rejuvenate the complexion of their faces and necks, but a specialist could treat any area of your skin. Remember: caring for one’s skin is always subjective. No two patients are alike, so be sure to consult with a professional before your first microdermabrasion treatment.
